Gone are the days where it's trendy for everyone in a family session to wear the same white shirt! Let's mix it up. Let's first talk about color.

Color Meanings

First consider the type of session. (Engagement, Maternity, Family, Newborn). What feelings do you want to invoke in your photos? What look and style are you going for?

Next Consider your setting. (Forrest, Coffee shop, field, downtown). Depending on your location, you will have certain colors blended into your surroundings.

Red: Power, Passion, Energy

Orange: Joy, enthusiasm

Yellow: Happiness, Intellect

Green: Growth, ambition

Blue: Tranquility, confidence, Peace

Purple: Luxury, Creativity

Black: Power, mystery

White: Safety, innocence

Color Schemes

How do you get colors to blend together properly? There are Seven types of color schemes, Monochromatic, Analogous, Complimentary, Split Complimentary, Triadic, Square, Rectangle. Let's focus on the first three.

  1. Monochromatic: Single hue of color with varying shades and tints Ex: Light Red, Red, Dark Red
  2. Analogous: Three colors. One main color and the two colors next to it on the color wheel. Ex: Green, Blue, Yellow
  3. Complimentary: Colors opposite each other on the color wheel. Ex: Teal, Orange
